Netflix Secures U.S. Rights – Lord of the Flies Series
Netflix has secured U.S. streaming rights to a new television adaptation of William Golding's classic novel, developed by Jack Thorne, the creative force behind the Emmy-winning series "Adolescence."
Sony Pictures Television confirmed the agreement on Friday, coinciding with the show's presentation at the Berlin Film Festival. The series made its debut on BBC in the United Kingdom on February 8 and has since been picked up by broadcasters worldwide across multiple continents.
International distribution deals have been finalized with numerous platforms and networks. These include Sky serving Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy; CBC handling English-speaking Canada while Radio-Canada covers French Canada; TVNZ in New Zealand; SYN in Iceland; U-Next in Japan; YES in Israel; Globoplay in Brazil; Telia in Estonia and Lithuania; TET+ in Latvia; HBO and HBO Max throughout Central and Eastern Europe including Poland; and beIN across Middle Eastern and North African regions.
This marks the inaugural television interpretation of Golding's renowned literary work, presented as a four-part series. The cast features Lox Pratt, who is set to portray Draco Malfoy in HBO's upcoming "Harry Potter" production, joined by emerging talents Winston Sawyers, David McKenna, Ike Talbut, Thomas Connor and additional cast members. The narrative maintains the original premise of young boys marooned on a remote tropical island who must navigate survival challenges.
Mike Wald, co-president of distribution and networks at SPT, praised the adaptation: "Jack Thorne's contemporary take on this timeless story is, in one word: powerful. This first-ever television adaptation of the iconic novel delivers on every level, including its cinematic scope and transportive music, and we are thrilled with the incredible response that we have seen from buyers in every market."
Thorne's previous collaboration "Adolescence," which premiered last March and was co-created with actor Stephen Graham, achieved remarkable success on Netflix. The series, centered on a 13-year-old boy detained for allegedly murdering a classmate, garnered widespread critical praise and audience engagement. Its accolades included eight Emmy Awards, notably for outstanding limited or anthology series, with Stephen Graham winning lead actor and breakout performer Owen Cooper receiving supporting actor honors.
The announcement was initially disclosed by Deadline Hollywood.
